The very latest on Levi Colwill as Liverpool continue to register their interest in signing the 20-year-old defender but Chelsea insist he is not for sale this summer
Liverpool remain interested in Levi Colwill this summer, football.london understands, but Chelsea remain determined to keep hold of the young defender.
The 20-year-old is due to return to the Blues once the Under-21s European Championships, where he is representing semi-finalists England, has concluded. Colwill is a man very much in-demand this summer after a really impressive 2022/23 season on loan down on the south coast with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seagulls want to sign Colwill permanently and have already seen two offers turned down by Chelsea for the defender. The Cobham graduate is set to join up with the rest of the Chelsea squad and meet new head coach Mauricio Pochettino over the next couple of weeks where he will sit down with the Argentine and discuss what is in store for him.
Colwill wants assurances over the amount of first-team football available to him at Chelsea next season. January signing Benoît Badiashile, who has impressed in his short time with the club, is also a left-footed centre-back, meaning there is fierce competition for places at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, however, want to tie Colwill down to a new long-term contract, with his current deal in west London due to expire in less than two years’ time. There is an option to extend Colwill’s deal at the club by one year but that only happens if the defender plays a certain amount of games for the first-team.
Despite Chelsea being set on keeping Colwill at the club, there is still some lingering doubt that will only be put to bed after having a discussion with Pochettino. Liverpool are aware of this and have enquired multiple times about the availability of the England U21 international, including in the last few days.
The Reds are looking at adding another central defender to their ranks before the new season starts. Jurgen Klopp is understood to be a huge admirer of Colwill’s talents after Liverpool watched him on multiple occasions last season down at the Amex Stadium.
Chelsea, though, are not expected to give Liverpool any encouragement when it comes to the Reds’ chances of signing Colwill. The Blues view him as someone who can be integral to their back-line for the next 10 years and are really keen to reach an agreement over an extension on his contract.
Also, Pochettino is excited to work with Colwill, football.london understands. He is very much viewed as part of the Argentine’s plans ahead of the manager’s debut season at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s stance on the Colwill situation has not changed: the defender is not for sale.
