Martina Navratilova issues striking response to Megan Rapinoe's 'trans women in sport' comments
In what is rapidly becoming the hot issue of 2023, there continues to be a significant debate over the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Megan Rapinoe made comments regarding the issue in recent days as she prepared for her final Women’s World Cup campaign with the USWNT, however these words have brought a scathing response from other athletes.
Martina Navratilova was a tennis legend in her prime, however she took to Twitter to respond to Rapinoe’s interview with Time Magazine.
“Yikes,” she posted on Twitter.
Megan Rapinoe believes lawmakers are at fault
Whilst the issue continues to divide, there is a sense that political leanings are starting to influence how people view the topic, which is something that Rapinoe herself pointed out.
“We as a country are trying to legislate away people’s full humanity,” Rapinoe told Time Magazine.
“I see trans women as real women.
“It’s particularly frustrating when women’s sports is weaponized, show me all the trans people who are nefariously taking advantage of being trans in sports, it’s just not happening.”
Navratilova has been an activist for the gay community since her retirement, but her position on the issue of transgender women competing against biological women is rather different.
She was hugely in favor of the World Athletics decision to exclude transgender female athletes from women’s competitions.
“In the wake of World Athletics’ announcement, I think the best idea would be to have biological female and biological girls categories and then an open category,” she wrote in The Times.
