Two protesters throw confetti and puzzle pieces at Wimbledon over oil use
Wimbledon, a tournament famous for its security measures, saw two individuals jump onto court 18 on Wednesday to protest against the use of oil.
It happened during the match between Denis Shapovalov and Sho Shimabukuro, which was interrupted on yet another day that featured rain delays.
Before tournament security brought them down, the two protesters had time to throw orange confetti and puzzle pieces on the grass.
Just 24 hours ago, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, had been on the same playing surface, watching local player Katie Boulter’s match live.
Following to the incident, ‘Just Stop Oil’, tweeted: “Once again, orange clouds hang over a British sporting event this summer.”
Famous for ‘streakers’
The tournament has previous history with the appearance of ‘streakers’ (exhibitionists), who have appeared naked on the courts. One of the most famous incidents saw Mark Roberts jump on court 14 of the All England Club during a doubles match featuring Anna Kournikova.
Roberts holds the record for intruding while naked at different sporting events. He appeared in the middle of the court in the final of Roland Garros in 2003, when Juan Carlos Ferrero and Martin Verkerk faced off.
He also did so in the Grand National, in the British Open golf and even in the final of the Champions League.
