Carlos Alcarazstarted his American tour on August 5. His first destination was Toronto and he made it clear that he was going to play golf as soon as he landed in the Canadian city.
It has become his great hobby, even more so than chess. He rented some clubs and challenged Alexander Zverev. He repeated the same routine a week later when he stepped foot in Cincinnati, this time accompanied by Antonio Martinez Cascales.
“It helps him to disconnect from tennis because he is surrounded by green, in the middle of nature and that is the kind of location Carlos loves. He is very competitive and he plays golf totally seriously and to win,” Cascales explained.
“Yes, it helps him to disconnect and he is surrounded by green,” says Juan Carlos Ferrero. Juanqui, the world number one’s coach, is one of the reasons behind Alcaraz’s love of golf. He has a 1.4 handicap. In Alicante, they regularly visit the Alenda and Font del Llop courses.
Nadal plays the game
In the case of Rafael Nadal, another fan of the sport, his handicap is -0.4. The Spaniard even plays the Balearic championships and has not stopped practicing while out injured. He had to take a break after undergoing hip surgery.
Alcaraz arrived in New York on Monday, August 21, one day after the final of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 with Novak Djokovic. Hours later he was already playing golf at the exclusive Deepdale club, where you can only play alongside a member.
The week before Wimbledon, the two-time major champion went away for several days to play. One of his companions was professional Sam Smitherman.
Another day he challenged Daniel Evans. The Briton, his victim on Saturday in the third round of the US Open, beat him.
“Carlitos is improving as a golfer. He’s only been playing for a short time, but obviously he’s got club speed and he hits it pretty hard. What happens is that the ball goes a little bit to the right and he is working on it”, Sergio Garcia, a Masters champion, told MARCA.
Garcia, a friend of Ferrero’s, watched some of Alcaraz’s matches live from his box on center court at the All England Club.
“Tennis and golf have similar movements, it is a more horizontal movement but similar at the body level. That’s why tennis players have an easy time catching golf. It is a sport that engages a lot and practically everyone likes it,” said Garcia.
Nadal went to play golf with David Nalbandian in Halle one day after being crowned for the first time on the Roland Garros clay in 2005.
Now he has names like Tiger Woods and Fred Couples in his circle of friends. “I was always impressed by Tiger’s look before hitting the ball,” he says.
Rest and tourism
Alcaraz is now preparing for second week of the U.S. Open. The Spaniard did not train yesterday on the courts of Flushing Meadows in order to get enough rest.
Instead he joined his family and went sightseeing in New York, in what is his third visit to the city, but the first with his three siblings. He has already immortalized himself several times against the backdrop of the new skyscrapers of one of the capitals of the world. His physiotherapist Juanjo Moreno always stresses the importance of soaking up nature.
