Chelsea transfer news: Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have laid out their intentions to build Chelsea’s brand and revenues off the pitch since taking over
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital purchased Chelsea in May 2022, much has changed.
Results and performances on the pitch have been below par and this summer has had to be another transfer window of accepting losses.
Back in October, Clearlake Capital co-owner, Jose E Feliciano laid out the his partners’ ambition to double its revenue. “We think we have an incredible opportunity to double revenue,” he said at Bloomberg’s investment event last year.
“We think we have one of the best media properties and sport properties in the world where we can get to a £1billion of revenue.”
A study from Deloitte in March 2022, Chelsea created £436.6million revenue in 2021. For Feliciano’s ambition to become reality, the club will need to generate over double that figure.
One method that has been a helpful tool is bringing in millions from the United States thanks to Christian Pulisic. The winger moved to Chelsea in 2018 and brought with him millions of supporters who followed the club thanks to Pulisic.
As per journalist Joe Pompliano, Milan’s team store sales rocketed an incredible 266% in sales overnight. The club’s US customer base – which was previously worth 9% of their overall sales – increased to 43% after his arrival, with 90% of all customised Pulisic jerseys being sold to customers in the United States.
The Blues are interested in the former RB Leipzig man, having identified the midfield area as a priority position. Adams has a £20million release clause in his contract at Elland Road and if reports are to be believed, the club are currently considering whether to activate the clause or structure a different package.
Adams’ arrival would bring part of that American fanbase back to west London, something that could be key to Chelsea’s plan to double its revenue.
