Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz said Friday that he “will fight” to take the number one spot from Serbian Novak Djokovic before the end of the year, taking advantage of the Chinese ATP circuit, after winning in what was his debut at the China Open.
“Novak is going to play in Paris and the Finals. There are a lot of points there that he can win and that he would help him with the number one ranking,” he told a press conference after beating Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in Beijing in the first round.
“Obviously we’re going to fight to make sure that doesn’t happen and we can take that spot away from him.”
The Spaniard stressed that the “objective of these two tournaments”, referring to the Beijing ATP 500 and the Shanghai Masters 1000, is “to be able to perform well in the hope of regaining the number one spot.”
About his match against Hanfmann, he highlighted that he felt “really good, moving well, playing well”, and added that he still has to improve his serve, which “was not so good” in the first set.
On his first experience in the Asian nation, Alcaraz said he feels very grateful for the encouragement shown by so many people.
“It is wonderful to hear the local fans shouting my name and saying things in Spanish, like ‘Come on, Carlitos!’, ‘I love you, Carlos! These are things that, to tell you the truth, we didn’t expect,” added the player from Murcia.
Juan Carlos Ferrero’s pupil will face Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, who defeated Karen Khachanov of Russia, in the round of 16 this Sunday.
