The stage is set for the beginning of the 2023 US Open.
On Thursday, tournament organizers unveiled the main draw of the last grand slam of the season which will kick off next Monday, August 28, in New York City.
Here are some notable highlights from both the men’s and women’s draw.
Men’s singles draw
In the men’s singles draw, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is poised for a potential quarterfinal rematch with Jannik Sinner. The two fought out an epic match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the 2022 edition that went well into the night and will be remembered by all tennis fans.
Novak Djokovic, returning to the US Open for the first time since 2021, anchors the bottom half as the second seed. He will be facing Frenchman Alexandre Muller in the first round.
The top half also features third seed Daniil Medvedev, while the bottom half showcases fourth seed Holger Rune and returning finalist Casper Ruud.
Notably, the men’s draw boasts five seeded Americans in the bottom half, something that hasn’t happened since 2004.
Women’s singles draw
In the women’s singles draw, the spotlight shines on the potential quarterfinal clash between defending champion Iga Swiatek and the surging Coco Gauff, promising an enthralling encounter in the last grand slam of the year.
Gauff will enter the tournament with huge momentum after defeating Swiatek in their recent showdown in Cincinnati.
Gauff’s outstanding 11-1 record during the summer, coupled with victories in Washington D.C., and Cincinnati, has earned her the No. 6 seed.
Gauff’s journey in the top quarter begins with a match against a qualifier, and she could potentially face the rising 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the second round.
The women’s draw boasts other formidable contenders, including No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 4 Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon titleholder, and No. 5 Ons Jabeur, the
Wimbledon runner-up and US Open contender.
The top quarter of the draw may also give fans a great second-round match between two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, seeded at No. 11, and the former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, who is making her return to grand slam tennis after a three-and-a-half-year break due to her maternity leave.
