Jannik Sinner has secured his place in the final of the Miami Masters 1000 after a commanding victory over the previously unknown Daniil Medvedev in two straight sets (6-1 and 6-2) in just over an hour of play.
The Italian player, seeming to have figured out his opponent’s game, now has his sights set on overtaking Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked number 2, who lost in the quarter-finals, thus forfeiting valuable ranking points.
Should Sinner claim the Miami title, he will ascend to the second position in the world rankings, trailing only behind Djokovic.
Contrasting with last year’s Miami final, which saw Medvedev triumph with a score of 7-5, 6-3, in what turned out to be his final victory over Jannik in their recent encounters, this time around, the Italian left no room for doubt.
Sinner encountered some initial serve-related challenges but swiftly seized control of the match after securing the opening game.
Medvedev, who had emerged victorious in their previous five encounters, including the Australian Open final where Sinner staged an impressive comeback from a two-set deficit, struggled to find his rhythm, grappling with serving issues and unforced errors.
How did the match play out?
The first set saw Sinner swiftly break ahead, taking it 3-0, as Medvedev found himself unable to halt his opponent’s momentum.
The Russian managed to secure his first game with his serve only at 5-1, moments before Sinner closed out the set in just 33 minutes with a resounding 6-1 lead.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Sinner asserting dominance from the outset, securing an early break.
Despite Medvedev‘s attempts to mount a comeback at 2-1, including two break points that went unconverted, the Italian remained unyielding, showcasing his prowess with powerful forehands and consecutive aces.
With Sinner leading 5-1, Medvedev‘s efforts in a lengthy rally proved fruitless, leading to visible frustration and errors that drew disapproval from the crowd. Although Medvedev managed to salvage another game at 5-2.
Sinner swiftly closed out the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set, wrapping up the encounter in just over an hour and nine minutes.
With 21 victories under his belt so far in 2024, Sinner now finds himself in his third Miami final, poised for what could be a remarkable season.
