Chelsea have been in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer following the departure of Edouard Mendy
Thomas Tuchel looks set to help Mauricio Pochettino solve one of Chelsea’s biggest headaches by signing Kepa Arrizabalaga. The 28-year-old goalkeeper has been heavily linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge for a while now, and Bayern Munich could finally take him off the Blues’ hands.
According to German publication Sport1, the Bavarians have made the signing of a new shot-stopper one of their top priorities this summer following the departure of Yann Sommer, while Manuel Neuer continues to nurse a broken leg which he suffered during a ski trip in December.
It’s said that Bayern were initially keen to rival Arsenal for the signing of David Raya, but the Gunners waltzed away from negotiations with Brentford victorious. Sport1 add that the German outfit are now back on the prowl for an alternative and they’ve begun ‘initial talks’ with Chelsea over a deal for Kepa, who joined the club for a record-breaking £72million in 2018.
It’s said that Tuchel has personally recommended the Spain international to higher-ups at Bayern following their time together in west London. Interestingly, Kepa lost his place in the Blues starting lineup under the 49-year-old.
Tuchel preferred Edouard Mendy, who proceeded to play a major role in Chelsea’s magical Champions League-winning campaign. In May 2022, just a couple of months before Todd Boehly replaced him with Graham Potter, the Bayern boss issued a glowing review of Kepa.
In an interview with the club’s official website, Tuchel was quizzed on the Spaniard’s future ahead of the transfer window. He replied: “It depends what he wants and what his plans are. I know that we are very privileged to have Edou and Kepa in our squad.
“But I also know for sure that Kepa is not happy about the situation because he deserved to play more and he can be a very strong number one. He arrived as number one so the situation is not easy. He has been a fantastic team player since day one and never let anybody down.
“We did not have a conversation yet but I know that the goalkeeper coaches have these conversations at the moment and then we will take our time to speak with him and reflect on what’s best and what the possibilities are. As a coach, of course I’m super happy to have both strong goalkeepers so let’s see.”
