[ad_1]
We now know that the 2023 US Open men’s singles champion will be one of Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev or Ben Shelton.
Three of those players have won this Grand Slam before, as Alcaraz, Djokovic and Medvedev are all previous US Open men’s champions, while Shelton is enjoying the best run of his career so far.
It’s Alcaraz who is the defending champion, while Medvedev won it the year before and Djokovic has three titles in New York but none since 2018.
Which player has won tennis’ US Open men’s Grand Slam the most times?
This tournament technically goes all the way back to 1881, when it was called the United States National Championships. It didn’t become the US Open until 1968.
So, there is a need to distinguish between the multiple-time winners from the amateur era and from the open era.
If looking at all time US Open men’s winners then there are three players with a record seven titles each, namely Bill Tilden, William Larned and Richard Sears.
Sears was champion in 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886 and 1887, before Larned took his victories in 1901, 1902, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910, 1911 and Tilden won in 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925 and 1929.
Who won the US Open men’s singles the most times in the Open era?
If looking just at the Open era, there is also a three-way tie for the most championships, as Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer all have five victories in New York.
Conors‘ wins came in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1982 and 1983, before Sampras took the glory in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2002 and Federer racked up five American Grand Slams in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
There are then two players with four Open era victories in the US Open, Rafael Nadal and John McEnroe, ahead of Ivan Lendl and Novak Djokovic on three each.
The Serbian will hope to add another this weekend, to move level with Nadal and McEnroe on four US Open men’s championships.
